A friend wrote me and asked if I was going to write up an "almost Sub10 Ironman" post to go along with my Sub11 Ironman Download.

Hold that thought.

In 2008, I was the last person to cross the finish line in under 11 hours at Ironman Coeur d'Alene.  The voice of Ironman, Mike Reilly, got the crowd going as I approached the finish.  The crowd could hardly contain themselves because I had only a few seconds to spare as I crossed the finish line.  The sound of their cheers was deafening, it was an incredible rush and one of the best finishes I've had so far.

A few months after that race, I compiled my workouts into a post and did a small write up.  That seems like such a long time ago.  And a funny thing about time -- as it passes, you realize how ignorant you were.  At least that's how it is for me.

I like writing my thoughts but sometimes I look back and I just cringe.  There isn't anything wrong with that post in particular but I know what I was thinking at the time and that makes me cringe.  I thought I had it all figured out.  I didn't know jack but I thought I did.

Let me tell you what really happened during that race.  I got lucky.  That's it.  Yeah, I put in some training but it was just dumb luck because I raced the entire race by feel.  No powermeter, no heart rate monitor, just dumb luck.

Do I know more now?  Yes.  Do I have it all figured out?  Heck no!

I do blog requests so I'll compile the last 6 months.  Of course it might take me until September again to do it but I'll get around to it.  Before I go, let me give you something to chew on.

In the last 6 months, I logged 90 hours of swimming, 220 hours of cycling, 81 hours of running, and 41 hours of core work.  Add that up and you get 432 hours which is 109 hours more than what I logged for the same time period in 2008.

Now here's what you don't see.  I didn't just log more hours of training.  I reduced my workload, I further cleaned up my diet, I get a minimum of 7 hours of sleep along with a 30 minute nap, and I have the most supportive wife in the world.

It's not just about hours of training.
