A few years ago I ruptured a tendon in my hand rock climbing. When my friends saw my hand taped, every one of them had their own thoughts on what to do, what to take, and how long to wait before climbing again. It was suggested by many that I take glucosamine and chondroitin. Glu-who I thought? I'd never heard of the stuff but it was apparently a common pill being popped by all of the climbers.
At the time, I think I only took three pills a day -- a multi-vitamin, an allergy pill, and I can't remember the third pill so maybe it was only two. Everyone seemed to think it was a good idea so I purchased a big bottle of the stuff and started taking it daily. After a few weeks off, my hand healed enough that I was able to get back to climbing and I continued taking my daily pill despite not really knowing whether or not it worked.

A few years passed and I just kept buying the stuff not really knowing but believing that all of those people couldn't be wrong. I had encountered numerous others that were taking it for joint related issues or as a preventative measure for "something". This actually reinforced my taking of the pill.
I'm addicted to the Dr. Dean Edell radio show and one day he was taking about this very stuff. He said he was initially hopeful but the more recent studies were starting to show that it might not be the miracle drug that all of my climber friends thought it was. I decided I'd stop taking the pill and see if I noticed anything different. I didn't. But it's like getting the flu shot and not getting the flu. How do you know whether the shot worked or if you were not in the presence of the flu? You don't. But I started to have my doubts and stopped taking it altogether not soon after.
A few weeks passed, then months, now years, and I have discovered that I am no better or worse than I was when I was taking it. I am completely convinced the stuff is not what it claims to be and recent studies have shown that real doctors think so too. "Recent studies have shown" is a current topic on Chuckie V's blog. So in the spirit of NOT being one of those people, I will actually site a source in order to show that I actually do some research here.
Science Based Medicine
If you take a trip to your local pharmacy and cruise the vitamin isle, you will find an endless number of pills making numerous claims. So the question is... do they work? I've given you an example of one that doesn't work. How many others don't work?
In the last few years, I've stopped taking the multi-vitamin as well and try to get my vitamins and minerals naturally through my diet. This is also a recommendation from my favorite doctor... Dr. Dean Edell.
