I had originally planned to make these into little balls but then the title of this post became R Rated. :|
You might be asking yourself... WHY would I need to make my own bars? I'll tell you why. Because all of the different bars I'm buying are starting to taste the same -- they all taste like crap. Take your favorite food, whatever that might be, and eat it over and over and over and over and tell me if it's still your favorite food.
The other day while doing a long workout I was reaching for another bar and I just couldn't do it. I couldn't put the bar into my mouth. I hesitated for a few minutes but then realized it was either eat the bar or bonk and ruin the workout. So I ate the bar and I cringed as soon as I tasted it. It was at that moment I decided I would make a trip to the store and do something about it.

I entered the grocery store on a mission. But rather than download a bunch of the same recipes for making the same home made bars, I decided I would just start buying. I grabbed coconut, powdered milk, chocolate chips, and almond butter. I looked around for sunflower seeds but couldn't find any and I didn't really feel like using nuts so I went back to the baking isle and started to scan the shelves one by one. As I was hunting for another ingredient, I found flaxseed which I knew was healthy but I didn't know much about it. Once I saw the little seeds I was kind of turned off but then I spotted flaxseed flour, grabbed it and then I was satisfied I had enough.
Rather than make a giant pan of something I might not eat, I decided I would just start throwing small amounts into a bowl and create one serving. And rather than complicate it with different amounts, I decided to just use even amounts to see what that would produce.
Bar Concoction #1
- one tbsp coconut - one tbsp flaxseed flour - one tbsp powdered milk - one tbsp almond butter
Mix it together and shape into a bar and you wind up with a tasty little treat that has about 260 calories.
I ate it right out of the bowl without refrigerating it but I've got another one in there right now wrapped in wax paper to see if it gets better or worse.
In my next test, I think I might include some seeds and possibly some chocolate chips. I might eliminate the coconut from that batch in order to make a slightly different tasting bar.
I know it's silly and it probably costs me more money in the end but I'm just so tired of eating the same bars, I have to try something new.
I actually waited to post to eat the bar out of the refrigerator. They taste good cold too. :)

Do the bars melt and get mushy when they get warm? Sounds tasty (and you know how much I love cheap/free alternatives to...well...spending money), so let me know...
