2013 Ironman Coeur d'Alene

I created an interesting situation last year when I qualified for Kona in Arizona because I felt like I had backed myself into a corner and my only option was to raise the bar.

That's all cool when you're seven months out, talking it up among your friends and family, but once the race started closing in on me, I began to wonder how it would all work out.

CdA Eve 2013

It's been an interesting few days. The relentless rain and weekend forecast had me a little concerned. In years past, there's always the threaten of rain and the frequent changes to the weather forecast but from the moment I arrived until yesterday, it rained pretty much nonstop.

The lack of any real break in the rain started to wear on my and my concerns shifted straight to race day. Would I race if it were pouring rain? Is it worth the risk? Would they cancel the swim if there was a threat of lightening? How would I feel coming down those descents at 50 MPH if the roads were wet?

2013 Leona Divide

My first 50 miler (!) and other than some long training runs, I really had no idea what to expect. But as prepared as I was going to be, we hopped in the car for the drive south to Lancaster, CA which was the nearest big (ha!) city to the race start.
